When the project file has been updated with one or more translations, it is time to identify the strings that need to be translated by extracting them from the various tr() calls found throughout the application. There are other cases, too, but they will be discussed later. The lupdate tool is used to extract the phrases it creates or updates all ts files listed in a given project file. It is nice to know that when it updates an existing file it does not remove anything all the translations already done are kept intact. Because the project file is called sdi.pro, the command to enter at the command line is lupdate sdi.pro. This will create the sdi_sv_SE.ts file from the strings found in the sources in the project file. Although Qt comes with a tool for software translators, not all translation businesses want to use custom tools. Fortunately, the ts files are quite easy to process because they are formatted as XML. Listing 10-1 shows an extract of the untranslated sdi_sv_SE.ts file. Listing 10-1. There are situations in which some safe subset of HTML should be allowed past filters and rendered to the user. An example would be a web-based e-mail application that allows harmless HTML tags (such as <h1>) in HTML e-mails to be rendered to the user, but does not allow the execution of malicious script contained in an e-mail. The general recommended approach to this problem is to parse the HTML with a strict parser, and completely remove all tags and attributes that are not on a whitelist of tags and attributes that are known to not allow arbitrary script execution.

The first piece of middleware to be called on any request is the Cascade. When it is passed environ and start_response(), it first calls static_app to see whether the URL requested matches a file in your project s public directory. If static_app returns a 404 Not Found response, the Cascade will instead call the main Pylons application.

Qt is bundled with the Linguist tool, which provides the translator with a convenient overview of the strings to translate and their respective status: done, unknown, or missing. It also provides some simple checks to ensure that the translations are okay. For example, it checks that the final punctuation is the same in both the original and the translated string. Starting Linguist produces the user interface shown in Figure 10-2. The figure shows the application after the translation has been opened and a few strings have been translated. If you look more closely at Figure 10-2, you can see that the Linguist interface consists of three panels. In the Context panel (on the left) are the classes containing strings and their respective strings. The currently selected string is shown in its original and translated form in the main panel (top right). In the Phrases panel, Qt suggests translations from looking at earlier translations and a phrase book that you can load. (Phrase books are not covered here.)

Note This is why you need to delete the public/index.html file before the root URL of the site will serve content from a controller. If you changed the order of the applications in the Cascade, you would not need to delete the file because the Pylons application would be checked first before the public directory, but since more files are likely to be handled by static_app than Pylons during each page view, it is usually more efficient to keep the order as it is.

Getting this right is fairly difficult; we highly recommend that designers and developers of such applications consult a security expert versed in web application and cross-domain security issues.

This brings you to the next nontranslated string if the four validators are okay. The validators can be turned on and off from the Validation menu. Their functions are listed as follows: Accelerators: This function ensures that there is an accelerator in the translation if there is an accelerator in the original string. Ending Punctuation: This function ensures that the ending punctuation of the original and the translated strings match. Phrase Matches: This function checks to see whether the original string matches a known phrase. In that case, the translation should be the same as the translation of the known phrase. Place Marker Matches: This function ensures that place markers (for example, %1, %2) from the original string also exist in the translation.

The next middleware in the chain is the RegistryManager, which is responsible for managing the Pylons globals in a thread-safe way. Let s look at it in detail before returning to the middleware chain.
